  2. For Mr. Van Hemlock: I used to do a lot of medium / long distance running in my distant youth, and was reasonably good at it. The more you run, the better your lung capacity will become. Swimming and cycling are also good ways of increasing lung capacity, but I guess you are just sticking to running for now. Also, I found that having a rhythm of strides per breath was a good way to stop yourself from breathing too hard. I used to run at either 2 strides breathing in, then 2 out, or 4 in 4 out depending on how fast I was running, what I was running on, and how far I was running.

    Hopefully this helps, and I hope you stick at it, and get to enjoy the benefits of being generally fitter.
